One of the many photo’s from my trips to Monet’s Pond
LETS ESCAPE TO FRANCE!
Monet’s Pond in Giverny has helped me more then any other subject, to move from painting a scene, to painting a much more abstracted personal response to what is in front of me in the landscape. On this course I am going to teach you how I learnt how to paint nature inspired abstracts, from a deep involvement with this very special place.
I have never painted at the actual pond, nor would I want to. I have used my photos and memories of what his pond feels like, to kickstart abstracts, and that is what I am going to teach you!
On this course you will learn how to:
Create dynamic marks to evoke natural rhythms and forms and have lots of fun in the process!
Choose and edit photographs so that they will help your work, but not become your work.
Be bold with colour and restrained with colour equally, to create paintings full of chromatic surprise.
Compose your abstract paintings so that they are attractive to the eye and hold a viewers attention,
Make mistakes often, and learn how use them boldly to really add to the painting process and result.
Screen shot of another demo on this course. :) I talk you through every step of how I create my paintings.
Course Outline
Week 1 - Make your Mark
This week we will use a variety of tools to create organic marks that evoke the shapes and rhythms of Monet’s Pond.. We will also look at how Monet makes marks and how he has influenced many Contemporary artist’s including Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombley’s very distinctive approaches to drawing..
Week 2 – COLOUR CREATES SPACE
Next we are going to look at the enormous variety of neutrals and saturated colour that is such a key characteristic of Monet’s pond. We will also look at how he used colour to create his gorgeous paintings from the pond. I have many photos from his wonderful collection in the Musee Marmottan Monet in Paris, that will provide more colour explorations.
Week 3 - COMPOSITION IS KEY
This week we will look at several abstract compositional devices and develop a series of small paintings that will inform the two larger paintings next week.
Week 4 - COMPLETE THE JOURNEY
This week we will paint two large paintings using everything we have learnt so far.
