Colour confidence – A sensual approaCH
Self - Study
On this course we will focus on how to work with color in an intuitive, sensual way, because that’s the way I am working with color, and that’s how artists whose colour sense I admire like Monet, Diebenkorn, and Joan Mitchell, worked with color. They knew that you FEEL your way into colour. Color is a language of the senses and hard to pin down in words. There are really just four fundamental questions that color theory provides us with, that we need to keep in mind when we start to analyze any colour
What colour family does a colour belong to? ( Hue)
How light or dark is it? (Value)
How intense is the colour? ( Chroma)
Is the colour warm or cool? ( Temperature)
A little bit of colour theory is really helpful, but too much theory can obscure the natural affinity with color that we were all born with. In a nutshell, this is going to be a course that is theory light, but covers the essentials, and is full of creative projects to get your colour juices flowing!
We can only engage with our senses fully in opposition. You need to taste sour to appreciate sweet. CONTRAST is the key to understanding the dynamic effect of colour on our senses, and to make some sense of colour, and we will be exploring colour contrasts on this course in a big way. This is the key to dynamic, painterly, orchestrations of colour, that are irresistible to the eye. And that my friends is the goal here. I want us to become colour composers on this course.
There are lots of books out there about colour. I have more then enough, but I have yet to find one that excites me. I have designed this Ecourse to offer a fresh alternative, and it is suitable for everyone.
Course Outline
The subject matter on this course is colour, so we will be working in a mainly abstract way, with a hint of the landscape and figurative elements etc; and I will be using the four elements as a frame work for our colour explorations, to contain the huge subject that colour can become.
Week 1- Earth
This week we will look at the character and properties of each of the primaries, and learn how to become colour detectives as we train our eyes to see colours accurately. To keep ourselves in the grounded mood that earth suggests, we will explore low key palettes this week also. We will learn how to create a wonderful range of earthy colours using the primaries. We will create earthy colour chords using collage and paint, and I will demo an abstract homage in a low key palette to the master of an earthy palette, Rembrandt, to stimulate your creative juices.
Week 2 – Air
Now we are going up the opposite path to last week, and we are going to feel all airy and light, and create beautiful palettes that range from the mid- tones to white! This week we will explore how to work in a high-key palette The artist that immediately comes to mind as a brilliant example of this range of colour in action is Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park series, so we are going to use these amazing paintings to inspire us. We are also going to explore acrylic mediums and how they can support an airy feeling in our paintings through their translucent properties. I will demonstrate a high key painting this week that is airy and light. This will be a challenge for me as I am naturally drawn to the lower key palette. But its also super important to disrupt your natural tendencies as a painter, and to broaden your colour reach. Its also great fun for my students and very re-assuring to see that I struggle too. :)))
Week 3 -Fire
I am instantly transported to Spain and Flamenco when I think of this element as a container, so this week we are going to look at how music can be a powerful help to us in mixing colour. We are going to use flamenco music to stimulate us to create a palette of passionate colours and that is not necessarily red! One of my favourite artists Joan Mitchell will be our inspiration this week. She was an absolute master of a passionate palette, and used music constantly, and poetry, to stimulate her senses in the studio as she painted.
Week 4 -Water
Now I am in my natural Element as an Irish painter and its very appropriate that we end up here! This week will be all about how the colours of Ireland are in my DNA and inspire how I work with colour. I will be transporting you all virtually here, as I show you what I have learned about colour from this magical landscape, and why I am so drawn to water as a subject in many of my paintings. I am going to help you all to identify and tap into YOUR natural element as a painter too, as we all have different colour sensitivities which we must allow to surface in our work if we want to paint from our centre. Expect another big painting demo this week which combines high and low key palettes from one of my current fave locations in West Cork, a magical holy lake called Gougane Barra. This demo will make you all want to go there. :))
