Expressive Figures AND FACES 2
INSPIRED BY “THE” ULTIMATE WOODSTOCK 69’ FESTIVAL!
SELF - STUDY
Capturing dance in a gesture drawing. Demo from the course
This Ecourse is all about using a theme to inspire characterful drawings and paintings of figures and faces in a setting, in this case the temporary ‘garden of eden’ that brought a huge range of people who loved music and dancing to a big field in Woodstock NY! It was an iconic event where people really felt at one with nature and each other. It provided a fantastic visual record of the figure in a landscape!
Using pictures from this event enables us as artists to move beyond the posed figure in the studio, to the figure and figures in a natural setting. The poses that we will be using on this course are all from the fantastic documentation that exists from this unique event, and are far more interesting then a studio set up, and far more naturalistic. People were caught in motion rather then being told to pose for the camera. There was an extraordinary range of emotion captured in how people used their bodies and that emotion was writ large in their faces also. Helped of course by the drugs they were taking. :) We will be exploring how to capture character in a face on this Course also.
I am all about capturing emotion in my work and Woodstock 69 is a fantastic resource for this. Thats why I chose it as the umbrella theme for this course. I hope you enjoy joining me as we get inspired by the characters in Woodstock 69’ Let’s look at what we will cover each week:
Week 1 - The feel of your touch
This week we are going to explore the gesture of the figure using fluid and varying pressure in our mark making, and lo0se and free brushwork.
Dancing figures will feature of course because Woodstock was all about feeling the music through the body!
We will also look at source material and how to find interesting photos to work from on the course.
We will do a drawing inspired painting of festival goers at Woodstock suggesting space and a landscape through pared back minimal means.
Week 2 - Good Vibrations
This week we will really explore how colour palettes can be used to create a mood and a unifying connection between the figure and the landscape
We will Study how Bonnard uses heightened nature inspired colours in his figures to serve his emotional needs as a painter and steal like an artist from him. :)
We will paint a Woodstock couple kissing in a shady tree lined stream, using a pared back palette that is inspired by Bonnard’s technique of blending the figure with the landscape through a shared palette.
Week 3 - Show some emotion.
This week we will explore a nocturnal palette and landscape, and how to convey emotion in the face in very understated ways ,but also in a more worked painting. I will demo a painting of Janis Joplin in a night sky setting, as we have to include a performer at Woodstock on this course as well as the groupies. :)) .
Week 4 - Come together
This week we will create a diptych! Two related canvases that combine the figure and the landscape to make a big statement painting.
