I’ve always wanted to create drama in my pictures, which is why I paint people.
Its people who have brought drama to pictures from the beginning. The simplest human gestures tell stories. – Lucien Freud

“I can vouch for Pauline Agnew’s amazing ability to connect with students and to get the most amazing work out of them! Whether you’ve done courses before or are a novice, you will surprise yourself at what appears under your hand and before your eyes! Seriously, think of giving this a go. She’s a Star from West Cork and a delight! You get so much for your money here and there’s no pressure, other than that you want to ride on her wave of skill, joy and enthusiasm for art.”

COURSE CONTENT

Week 1 – The face is a landscape

Keeping our materials simple and working with a limited palette, this week I will show you how to move beyond a generic illustration of the face, towards a more full expression.

Week 2 – Colour and emotion

This week we will discover how colour can contribute to an emotional response to the face as a subject and how to move beyond flesh tones to heighten the emotional impact of a portrait.

Week 3 – The expressive body

This week we will go back to a limited palette and learn how to draw and paint the figure in a dynamic way.

Week 4 – The figure in space

This week we will bring colour back in and look at ways of creating abstract backgrounds from landscape sources that situate a figure in space and suggests a narrative.
